Remove Stored Username in Firefox or IE

Learn how to remove old or incorrectly saved form field values in Firefox and Internet Explorer

Published Jul 19, 2007 by lobo235

When logging into some of your favorite sites on the web you may have seen that Firefox or IE has saved different usernames in the username form field. This can be a handy feature but it can also end up storing usernames that are mistyped or in some cases it might even store the same username twice which can become an annoyance because the wrong password might be saved for one of the entries. If you choose that entry, you will not be logged in properly. Here is a simple way to remove unwanted stored form values for any form field, and it doesn't have to be a username field.

Firefox

  • Click on the form field with the saved value you wish to remove
  • Press the down arrow on your keyboard until the value you wish to delete is highlighted
  • Now, press Shift-Delete on your keyboard and the highlighted stored value will be removed
  • Repeat the above steps for any other saved form field values you wish to remove

It also looks like you can just use the Delete key instead of having to use Shift-Delete in the newer versions of Firefox. If Shift-Delete doesn't work try just using the Delete key by itself to remove the saved form field value.

Internet Explorer

  • Click on the form field with the saved value you wish to remove
  • Press the down arrow on your keyboard until the value you wish to delete is highlighted
  • Now, press the Delete key on your keyboard
  • If you are removing a stored username and Internet Explorer has stored a password for the user you will get a prompt asking if you want to remove the user and the stored password. Click 'Yes' to remove the saved username/password
  • Repeat the above steps for any other saved form field values you wish to remove

Both Firefox and IE have options to delete all your saved form data as well but most users opt to only delete entries on a form by form basis so they do not remove saved values that may be important to them. To remove all the saved form data in Internet Explorer 7 go to 'Tools' on the menu and then to 'Delete Browsing History...' which pops up a window showing different things you can delete. Click on 'Delete forms...' to clear all saved form data. To do it in Firefox go to 'Tools' and then 'Clear Private Data...' check the checkbox next to 'Saved Form and Search History' and be sure to uncheck any items you do not wish to delete and then click 'Clear Private Data Now'. We hope you have enjoyed this quick tip and we hope it saves you from excessive browser frustration like it has saved us.
