I recently hiked to the top of Mount Nebo with a good friend of mine and I was very impressed by the hike and all the things I saw along the way so I decided to write about the hike here, on my website. Hopefully this information will be of use to you while you plan your Mount Nebo hike.

North Peak of Mount Nebo

The North Peak of Mount Nebo is the tallest one in this picture although during the hike you will climb both peaks shown.

Elevation at the Summit: 11,928 ft.
Elevation Gain: about 3,800 ft.
Round-trip Distance: about 8.85 miles
Round-trip Time: 5-7 hours

Hike Details:

Mount Nebo is the highest peak in the Wasatch mountain range located in Utah. It is also a very beautiful hike with an awesome view from the top. The round-trip distance of the hike is about 8.85 miles, most of which is not too strenuous. Hiking to the north peak of Mount Nebo usually takes about 5-7 hours depending on your pace. When you get to the last mile or so of the hike, however, you start to gain elevation very rapidly as you scramble up the shale-covered mountainside. When you reach the summit of Mount Nebo you will be at an elevation of 11,928 feet and throughout the whole course of the hike you will gain about 3,800 feet in elevation. The trail is well kept and only becomes difficult when you reach the loose shale on the side of the mountain. Some of the scenery you will see on the hike includes quaking aspens, white fur trees, grassy meadows, flowers of many colors, and many forms of wildlife. On a weekend in the summer you will most likely see a few small groups of people on the trail but this is not a really crowded hike like some of the other trails in Utah County.

If you are coming from the North on I-15 then to get to the trailhead you will need to take Payson exit number 252 and travel on the Nebo loop road until you reach the Nebo Bench / Monument trailhead. Then at the northern end of that parking lot there is a small dirt road which you can drive on to get to the Mount Nebo North Peak Trail. The trail will then start off going west following a barbed-wire fence.

Here is a small collection of pictures I took when I hiked Mount Nebo. If you have any pictures of Mount Nebo that you would like me to post on this website, let me know. I am always looking for more good pictures.
