Jordy, your video card does not have anything to do with the USB card. Also, the AGP interface is only for video cards so you will only be able to find PCI USB cards. Keep in mind that when I say PCI I am not talking about PCI-X (PCI-Express) I am just talking about good old PCI and any decent desktop computer should offer at least a couple PCI slots for upgrades such as this. Consult your local computer hardware store for tips/help with installation.

It was really very useful. Especially giving the picture of a PCI slot was a thoughtful idea.
Thank you.

I am also interested in bringing my Fujitsu C series Lifebook up to USB2.0 from 1.1.

Easy? Hard? Can or Can't do?

IndiQa,

You can't upgrade the existing ports of the laptop but you can buy a PCMCIA card that will give you some USB 2.0 ports. Use the following link to see some good deals on these adapters from amazon.com:

Hey thanks man.

Found one with a power adapter. Someone bought a card from Best Buy and it had no adapter so he couldn't run high powered USB devices. Did a search and won't have thqat problem.

Outstanding article. Thank you. I am wondering why the hardware needs to be upgraded to 2.0? It would seem to me that the existing physical wires, etc would already handle the data throughput. I'll try to research online but if you know why that would be a great sidenote to add to the article. Again, the article was superbly written. Thanks.

As far as I know you will not need new cables in order to acheive USB 2.0 speeds. The old cables should work just fine.

I have old computer with usb 1.0 port, have
empty PCI slot and wanna upgrade with PCI
usb 2.0 port. My question is, what will be the current speed for all devices that
connected to this new PCI usb 2.0 port?

Audi,

The USB 2.0 standard has a theoretical maximum speed of 480 Mbps. I don't know of a device that can actually reach this maximum but suffice it to say that your devices will be a heck of a lot faster with USB 2.0.

So connecting one of those 2.0 hub extensions with the 4 port adapter into the "USB port on my pc will not upgrade my 1.1 to 2.0? I have to go inside?

Hi. I have an old computer with usb 1,1 and want to go to 2.0. I'm interested in the 2.0 pcm card but I'm running windows 98 o/s. Will I need to upgrade to windows 2000 for the card to work or can I stay with windows 98?

I have an IBM thinkmad model A31 notebook computer running Winderz XP sp2. I bought a Dynex model DX-UC202 PCMCIA card bus adapter with usb 2.0 capability. I downloaded the correct drivers from the Dynex website. The Dynex literature tells you how to verify that the correct drivers were installed. THEY WERE NOT. No matter what I do, the correct drivers won't install, and if I try to use the device, such as for a thumb drive, it locks up the puter and trashes the file system on the thumb drive, thus requiring reformating. I have yet another IBM thinkmad notebook running Winderz 98. The win98 drivers install just fine and the Dynex usb adapter works fine. I explained all this in an email to Dynex tech support. Their reply was nonsensical.

Excellent site, keep up the good work. I read a lot of blogs on a daily basis and for the most part, people lack substance but, I just wanted to make a quick comment to say I’m glad I found your blog. Thanks

Thanks alot for this quick how to. My mom needed an USB 2.0 PCI, or a way to upgrade from 1.1. Your informations helped me. Thanks.

P.S: Why arent you using WordPress ?

Instead of using Wordpress I have written my own content management system. Not only was it a good practice in programming but my site is a lot simpler than a Wordpress site. I think it's faster too due to my use of memcache.

I\'ve tried 2 different hubs to get more USB ports and niether of them will work after they have been plugged in to the USB ports on the back of the computer. The ports on the computer are OK as the printer and optical mouse are plugged into them. But when I plug in the hub and then plug in the mouse and printer to the hub, nothing works thru the Hub. Any ideas????
