shane,

You most likely will need to enable the second display. In Windows this is typically done bye right-clicking the desktop and choosing 'Properties'. In the Display Properties window that comes up there is a settings tab that will allow you to enable the second display.

If you still can't get the image to show up then you should experiment with different Screen Resolutions and Screen Refresh rates (refresh rates are changed by clicking the 'Advanced' button. If you have your manual for your TV it may have information on supported display resolutions and refresh rates.

Let us know if you continue to have problems and we will try to help out more.

You will most likely need a VGA to Component cable adapter. Amazon has a number of them like the following:
Dayton HD15-RGB-15 VGA To Component Video Cable

If your laptop has a DVI output (usually white) you can get a DVI to HDMI cable which will give you better image quality. Here is a link to a DVI to HDMI cable:
Cables To Go - 40320 - 2M (6.5ft) Velocity HDMI to DVI Digital Video Cable

Thx for the informations. I always watch movie with lapton on TV, so that means all cables and connection to TV works gud. It is simple great.

But now my laptop monitor is broken, I would like that when I switch on the computer the video output goes directly to TV.

How can I do that?

THX!!!

Pls write me an email: ggk66@hotmail.com

GK, I am not aware of a way to set the TV as the default monitor until Windows starts up. Even then I think you need to have the TV connected with a VGA or DVI cable so the computer recognizes the TV as a monitor. Once you are in windows you can right-click the desktop and choose properties. Go to the Settings tab and you will be able to specify which monitor you want to be the default and you can turn off the laptop's monitor. I hope this helps!

I have a question i used a vga cable to hook up my desktop to my olevia hdtv flat screen but it wont work now that i got a laptop any idea why?

jack,

With the laptop you may need to specifically enable video output through the VGA port. In Windows this is usually done by right-clicking your desktop and choosing 'properties'. Then go to the 'Settings' tab and from there you should be able to enable the second monitor (which in this case would be your HDTV).

Hope this helps!

Yes, you would need to buy a coverter such as the following:

VGA to S-Video/RCA Coverter

hello,

Nice guide, however, I am using an HP laptop, which has an HDMI output. I connected that with my tv, and I also have a 720p version of the matrix on my laptop.

When i run the movie using VLC player, it's a .mkv file, it doesn't appear to be in HD at all, just regular quality.

how do I make it actually BE said 720p from my laptop to the HDTV?

the tv I am using is the new Samsung LN46A750

Victor,

One thing that is important to note is that you will get the best quality if you can use your HDTV's native resolution. On my older HDTV (which is 720p) the native resolution is 1366x768. 1080p HDTVs usually have a native resolution of 1920x1080. Matching up your laptop's output resolution through the HDMI to your HDTV's native resolution will give you the best results.

I connected my HDTV and laptop wuth an S-video cable, but all I get on the TV is my wallpaper,no cursor or anything else; even though the laptop screen shows everything
Posted: 2008-10-07 13:42:08 by lobo235 - Netlobo Staff Member
GG,

It sounds like your computer is using your HDTV as a secondary monitor. You can try dragging a window or icon to the right edge of your laptop screen and see if it shows up on the HDTV. If the right side doesn't work then try dragging to the left, top, or bottom.

Most of the time there will also be a setting that will allow you to just have the same thing shown on both monitors instead of using them as separate work spaces.

Hi Good information.
I connected Svideo cable and able to view the output on the TV But No sound, for that I had connected headphone jack and tv audio using a Y cable but still no sound is coming. Laptop and TV individually I can listen the sound but not when connected with a Y cable. Am I using a wrong cable or my TV Audio output jack is corrupted. How do I find if so.
Please help me in this.
Thanks

Hello. I have a Inspiron 1525 and would like to hook it up to my television (8 year old Panasonic) to watch movies. Do you know if there are any cables I can purchase to hook the two up?

Thanks!

I have an Dell Inspirion 1525 with an HDMI output plug and a Toshiba HD TV. I used a HDMI cable to link the laptop and the TV and I could get image in the TV, but no sound at all. What else should I do/chack/change to get sound in the TV? Can you help me out? Thanks for the help
Posted: 2008-12-01 08:58:59 by lobo235 - Netlobo Staff Member
Patricio,

Like most laptops, the Inspiron 1525 does not send sound through the HDMI port. You have to run the audio separately using one of the following cables:

3.5mm headphone to RCA cables

Hi I have a Dell Latitude and I have hooked up my laptop to my tv. The problem is that it shows the welcome screen and then my desktop but as soon as the windows music starts, it goes to showing no signal. I did the whole display options thing but it isn't offering any choice to change monitors.

sonya818,

Did you try pressing the Fn (function) key and F8 to change the display settings? Most dell laptops use Fn-F8 to switch between three modes:

1. Laptop Monitor only
2. Laptop Monitor and External Monitor
3. External Monitor only

I hope this helps!

HIYA, I HAVE A LENARO HDTV, AND A ADVENT LAPTOP, both have hdmi connections, i have plugged the cable in, and for a plit second i had my desktop on the tv, but when i started to watch a film, the tv went blank, and all i get now is nothing! when i reboot the laptop, the tv flickers with desktop, any ideas???

W,

Check the monitor settings for Windows to make sure it is configured to use both the laptop screen and the HDTV. If you need help changing the monitor settings just do a google search for "change monitor settings" and you should see some resources to help you.

Hello,

I have a Sony VAIO FW270 laptop (Native HD1080p - 16:9 - 1600 x 900 resolution), which has HDMI output (a very good multimedia laptop with 16.4 inch dispaly).
Now I decided to buy a HD Ready TV, a Samsung 32A466 (so resolution 1366x768). When I connect the laptop to the TV with HDMI 1.3 cable resolution of the laptop changes to 1366x768 (this is okey), the blue-ray movies are stalling. Even with simple 700 MB movies there are some lines visible in action scenes.

Do you know what could be the problem? Why is it so slow? This laptop is for multimedia, but even so it is slow on output on HDTVs.. :-?

I have a newer laptop with HDMI and an older (2003) plasma tv with a detached tv box. The TV doesn't have HDMI but does the RGB/DVI output. I have a connector cord to connect the HDMI on my computer to the DVI on the tv box and it doesn't work. Can you tell me what to do!?!?

Thanks!

We have a Sharp HDTV with 1080p resolution - it is approx 1 yr old. I have a Toshiba laptop that is about 6 or 7 years old. It has VGA output, no DVI or HDMI output. The TV has 6 input ports, ports 1 2 and 3 are RGB, ports 4 5 and 6 are HDMI ports. We bought a VGA to RGB cable, but when we plug it in I can't get the video to show up on the TV (tried the 2nd screen thing). It almost looks like from the TV manual (which isn't as helpful as I would like) that it will only accept PC input from ports 4 5 or 6. Do I need to buy a converter box instead of cables??
