I took a trip to Brigham City, Utah recently and had the opportunity to tour the Brigham City Tabernacle. During the summer months you can have a free guided tour of the building and even watch a video about the tabernacle and it's history. The Brigham City Tabernacle was one of the first buildings in Utah to be placed on the National Register of Historical Places and it's a beautiful landmark to visit. The next time you're in Brigham City I recommend that you check it out.

History

Construction of the Brigham City Tabernacle began in 1868 on a spot of land known as Sagebrush Hill. Original plans did not place the tabernacle at this location. During one of Brigham Young's visits to the area he chose the new site. Brigham Young was the prophet of the LDS church at the time. Construction of the tabernacle was finished in October of 1890. In the afternoon of February 9,1896 as people were gathering for church services the furnace caused a fire and despite all attempts to quench the flames, the fire burned everything but the stone walls in about 1 hour. The tabernacle was rebuilt in about 1 year with some new improvements. In 1985-1986 the aging tabernacle went through extensive restoration to ensure it would be preserved for years to come. It is said that every Mormon prophet has addressed a congregation in the Brigham City Tabernacle except for Joseph Smith who was martyred before it's construction.

Community

The Brigham City Tabernacle has been a center or worship for the people of Brigham City for many years. Today, church conferences, concerts, and other events are held within the tabernacle's walls. Community members hold deep respect for the beautiful landmark. The guided tours that are offered during the summer months are provided by local members of the LDS church on a voluntary basis. The tabernacle is the most prominent man-made structure in Brigham City and can be seen from Interstate 15 as you approach Brigham City. The address of the tabernacle is  251 South Main St. Brigham City, UT 84302.
